Themed picspamming, huzzah! (Or: I have too much time on my hands.)
I spend way too much of my time paying attention to screencaps of these two, apparently, because themes & patterns just keep arising! And, well, what place to share these ingenious observations if not here? And so, a big random picspam, with bonus discussion questions! Spoilers for 2x11 lurk within!

(Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] oltha_heri for the caps from "Getting Closer"!)

i. Making Elevators Awesome

Seriously. Elevators. They rock them. How is this even a thing that's possible?

ii. Matchy Body Language Galore

I love how they both have their own little default stances. Arms crossed! Hands on hips! But then occasionally, they escalate to matching poses and/or expressions.

iii. THE POWERWALKING

Well, this is just sacred stuff by now. SIGH! Also: I will never get over the fact that, in that last cap, they're all, 'Teehee, torturing people for information!' Oh, you weirdo freaks, you belong together.

iv. In A Post-'You Betrayed Me' World, Pair Newfound Animosity & Loathing With ... Lots Of Unnecessary Physical Proximity?

I don't know, guys, I just can't shake the suspicion that they are somehow torturing each other with sexiness.

Also, random discussion in addition to all the pretty, just because I've been pondering this for awhile! What moments do you guys think really suggest that this pairing is canonically intended within the realm of the show? Sometimes, I kinda get all, 'Wow, I just got all giddy over how two people walked next to each other while talking about work,' and then am inclined to stop and ponder. Like, in no way am I at all hating on the chemistry, because it kind of LIGHTS UP MY WHOLE LIFE WITH ITS UNDENIABILITY; I'm just curious for the sake of discussion, and sometimes I wonder whether, if asked about D/D, Joss or the writers or Olivia or Reed would be all, 'OH YEAH, THAT WAS TOTALLY ON PURPOSE' or more like, 'Um ... what?'

Stuff that strikes me as being indicative as some sort of canonical romantic interest, sans my bias to see shippiness in everything about them ever, in a just-off-the-top-of-my-head and random listing:

+ Adelle sobbing after finding out about Dominic in "A Spy in the House of Love." Paired with the fact that the Roger plotline revealed a lot about her romantic life (or that thereof) and her discontentment, that will always just strike me as being somehow subtextually entangled with her feelings for Dominic. (Also, that totally got a mention on ontd! I always get a somewhat stupid thrill when regular viewers seem to pick up on that.)

+ The fact that they were so nervous & awkward around each other at the end of "Echoes." That was just gloriously weird & suspect in its tension! I think everyone I have ever watched that with has been left wondering whether they made out while under the influence or something.

+ Dominic hitting Hearn in "Man on the Street" when Hearn suggests Adelle is sweet on him. Aw, chivalry! (And torture! Their two favourite things!)

+ In a similar vein, him rushing to stand between her and Boyd in the first episode when Boyd is yelling at her. Of course, I guess this is in the job description, but there is this fierce inherent loyalty in the way he protects her that strikes me as so sort of classically chivalrous and romantic, and it's especially interesting considering they're both rather diabolical people condoning things that are really morally questionable. To make a reference to another Joss pairing, it reminds me a little of Spike and Drusilla, how, sure, they were evil vampires!, but their love and loyalty for one another was really very pure and classically romantic.

+ As mentioned earlier, the fact that they get in each other's space so much after Adelle finding out Dominic was a spy. It's like, if they were really just filled with endless hatred for each other, would they really be so sexy about it? And I think the juxtaposition between how clipped & professional they were before is interesting: it's like they finally feel free to get in each other's space, except it's to torment each other, except somehow it mostly just seems like they want to make out. And are possibly torturing each other with that fact.

So, er, yeah, I think this may just be me endeavoring to facilitate discussion so I don't have to think about school starting tomorrow! Besides, this is an exciting & temporarily joyful time for us, and I figure we should savour it while we still can! The last time I got this excited about amazing shippy happenings in the eleventh episode of the second season of a show, the next two episodes involved ... er, one member of said ship murdering the other member of said ship. I feel like possibly we should be steeling ourselves for extreme badness. (But oh, can't they live post-apocalyptically happily ever after??)

And, heck, let's leave off once more with this one, because I cannot get over how delightful it is. Oh, Topher, Mommy and Daddy so do not approve of your shenanigans.

With ... Lots Of Unnecessary Physical Proximity?
Seriously, you'd think for a spy and a crazy boss lady they'd be able to do subtle better.

Dominic hitting Hearn in "Man on the Street" when Hearn suggests Adelle is sweet on him.
I CALL PROOF!

It's like, if they were really just filled with endless hatred for each other, would they really be so sexy about it?
This. It is their post Spy In The House Of Love (and during that episode too) interaction that makes me think their a bit canonical. These are people who kill the person who betrayed/atticed them, and yet they don't. Adelle would rather he didn't die, and Dominic in Epitaph One he stops strangling her and doesn't shoot her. These are not people who do that out of the goodness of their heart.

I ship mostly non-canon pairings (or at least that is how it feels), and when I went to make a vid of them I was confused, because I had so much to work with. I definitely think they're at least not non-canon.

Also, see icon for more proof.

And if this is what you do with screen caps I will provide for you forever. :)

This picspam is amazing!

Seriously. Elevators. They rock them. How is this even a thing that's possible? -- They are seriously epic and beyond this world because I don't think elevators have ever been cool before them. Places to hook up? Sure. But places where awesome is just born? NOT UNTIL THESE TWO. The grainy cap when they leave the elevator? FIERCE. And just generally everything in those flashback caps.

eehee, torturing people for information!' Oh, you weirdo freaks, you belong together. -- LOL. This. I couldn't help but love that little moment of torture bonding. Hilariously awesome. And that last cap of them giving Topher the Mommy and Daddy eyes is greatness itself. Dominic come back and take your place at Adelle's side in the next two episodes please. FOR US SHIPPERS.

THIS PICSPAM WINS AT LIFE. I have never before been so interested in elevators.

I don't know, guys, I just can't shake the suspicion that they are somehow torturing each other with sexiness.

They are definitely torturing me.

+ Adelle sobbing after finding out about Dominic in "A Spy in the House of Love."
This scene was so crushing and, to me, really shows the depths of her feelings for him. It's an interesting question, is their love canon?, I don't really know. I see it, in the way they walk, in their loyalty, in their conversation, in their betrayal, in their hatred. I think Olivia said that the Vodka scenes was her favourite scene which implies to me that she thinks there is something deeper in their relationship (or she just likes getting shot at...idk :D)

God, just thinking about their relationships makes me sigh big happy/angsty breathes.

it's like they finally feel free to get in each other's space, except it's to torment each other, except somehow it mostly just seems like they want to make out. And are possibly torturing each other with that fact.

THIS.

OH OH OH PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY!! YOU MADE NEED TO RESUSCITATE ME BECAUSE I MAY HAVE FAINTED FROM THE AWESOME THIS POST BRINGS.

...I'M BETTER NOW. I THINK.

The fact that they were so nervous & awkward around each other at the end of "Echoes."
THIS ONE RIGHT HERE. This scene in "Echoes" is what actually opened my eyes to the glorious thing that is them. (DON'T EVEN ASK ME WHY I DIDN'T NOTICE IT BEFORE BECAUSE I'VE ASKED MYSELF THIS PLENTY. I WAS A BLIND FOOL.) When he walked into her office and they just stared awkwardly everywhere but at each other...??? My right eyebrow raised itself and I said to the tv "WHY SO AWKWARD YOU TWO?" It was weird because they really had NO REASON to be that awkward because as far as we know they never came into contact while under the influence. I DON'T KNOW. IT IS WONDEROUS THOUGH.

I made a picspam awhile ago of "Echoes" so here I bring some PROOF OF THE AWKWARD LOOKS:

Image
Image

THEY TRIED FOR THE EYE CONTACT BUT WERE SO EMBARRASSED IT DIDN'T KEEP. THEY LOOK AT THE GROUND, TO THE SIDE, DOMINIC EVEN LOOKS AS IF HE'S SHUFFLING HIS FEET, LOL. THIS SCENE IS FILLED WITH SUCH DAZZLING UST I CAN'T BELIEVE IT WASN'T SOMEHOW NOTED IN THE SCRIPT.

LOLOLOLOL

WHY SO AWKWARD ADELLE AND MR DOMINIC?

The last two caps where they are looking away from each other is perfect.

I do wonder what this whole thing was about...

It is very suspect. Because, like I said, they weren't around each other during the drug induced silliness so neither one actually knows how absolutely goofy the other was acting. It's not like Adelle would announce to him "Oh yeah I was bouncing around on trampolines and eating inappropriate starches and pondering the incomprehensibility of lentils!" I guess Adelle would know more about the first of Dom's antics because Secret Agent Victor called her, but she doesn't know of the more embarrassing (but oh so delightful) petting of his super soft suit.

Why yes, I have thought about this a lot. It's one of my favorite scenes, I can't help myself!! So many sexy possibilities go into their ending awkwardness.

Adelle sobbing in "Spy in the House of Love" is what truly launched my shippy heart on these two, though the awkwardness in "Echoes" (and Adelle's concerned "take care of him" when she finds out Dominic's been drugged) laid the foundation.

Oh, these two. ♥

AH JUST LOOKING AT THEM MAKES ME SO HAPPY. They are so great!

I will never get over the fact that, in that last cap, they're all, 'Teehee, torturing people for information!'

Me neither! It's just so creepy and adorable.

And I started shipping them early, but I didn't get 'canon!' about it until Spy in the House of Love. With Hearn, it's interesting that he just gets dead whereas Dominic gets shoved in the Attic. And there are other plot reasons for that, because he still has useful information and they need people in the Attic anyway to keep the organization going, but I like to think that it was at least a little bit because she couldn't let him go. Although Dominic is really not going to see it like that, because I think the Attic and death in general is a really interesting point of difference between the two of them - Dominic would rather be dead than in the Attic, both times around, while Adelle seems to put much more emphasis on survival at any cost. AND ALSO, SHE CRIES. LIKE REALLY HARD. So, even if people don't necessarily see it as a sexual relationship, there was really obviously a deep emotional one there. Because if that was just a professional betrayal, she would have been pissed but she wouldn't have cared that much. So it's obviously deeply, deeply personal.

And then I think Epitaph One really drove it home for me, because Dominic is so angry and yet it's really clear he's never going to be able to actually kill her. He yelled a lot, especially because I think more than anything he wanted some kind of emotional response from her that he didn't get in A Spy in the House of Love, but at the end of the day I feel like he's going to go right back to doing what she says.

Love what you said about Epitaph One too. Can't wait for Epitaph Two and keeping my fingers crossed for D/D scenes.

I really hope Epitaph Two has them together! If the office scene was a real scene and not just and Attic scenario or an AU, then it really needs some follow up.

Oooh--thank you for the picspam--I love it!

The three main things that made them sort of a canon pairing for me (or at least not non-canon, as oltha_heri said):

1) Epitaph One. The tension in their scene is just O_O. A friend who was watching that ep with me but didn't watch all of s1 eps asked if they slept together before.
2) Dominic hitting Hearn after the 'sweet on me' comment.
3) Adelle crying after Dominic's betrayal.
4) Dominic defending his actions during the same episode. The 'I never lied to you about my methods or my priorities' didn't seem to me so much of 'oh shit I'm gonna die/get sent to the attic' but he really wanted her to understand for...other reasons? (Maybe I'm reading too much into this?)

Other shippy things!
1) As many mentioned: the please take care of him and the ending of 'Echoes'.
2) Elevator scenes!
3) Powerwalks
4) We are evil and we love to torture people via ep 2.11

I have to admit I can be quite a pessimist, the touch scene in 2.11 made me think--damn, is Adelle just keeping him alive to use him? :P

How could I forget? Dominic calling DeWitt by her first name when he was pleading to her not to give him the injection (and how close she got to him when she went all husky voiced with "Alpha? That easy? Alpha". Happy shipper.

PICSPAM. WHEEEE. I LOVE 'EM. AND YOUR SUBHEADINGS FOR THEM ARE JUST PERFECT

As I said before, I only started noticing the tension in 1x06 (elevator scene), but promptly ignored it because of my tendency to board the wrong ships. And then 1x07 happened and I went to the internet to see if I'm not seeing things. AND I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE SEEING THINGS *happy dance*

And then 1x09 happened and I saw Adelle sobbing and then the Dominic being all "OMG, NOT EVERYTHING IS A LIE!" and then looking at each other while the other's going to be wiped. JUST. OMG.

In A Post-'You Betrayed Me' World, Pair Newfound Animosity & Loathing With ... Lots Of Unnecessary Physical Proximity?
THIS.

You know, there's part of me that thinks it's deliberate, if not on the writer's part, then with the actors and the directors. IDK. I mean, if it's not deliberate, why are people seeing it? I mean, it's not just us. EVERYBODY sees it. GADS.

Um. Yeah. Here's a gif.

this gif! :D Her face! I loved it. Yes Adelle, he is actually kind of sweet heee.

I love the fact that Adelle was comfortable enough to show Dominic when she's frustrated or whatever. She of course presents this aura of cool, calm, authority, but with Dominic, in that scene she kept eying him and giving him this look of "!!!" or whatever.

I THINK A REWATCH IS IN ORDER *goes to watch*.

Awesome picspam! What really got me in was the scene in the Spy in the House of Love... I mean, I liked them before, but after the scene when Adelle cries and then after it becomes clear WHY exactly she cries, I was all "Omg, this is so canon, omg omg!" or something. The whole big epic story of UST and professionalism and high heels and suits stared building up in my head after that and of course I rewatched every single episode for the sole purpose of dissecting their scenes together.
For one, the Awkwardness in Echoes. I mean, clearly this meant that there was not ONLY professionalism between them!! :D
And of course, the famed 1x06 elevator scene! There, when I saw it for the second time, I was like "Okay, NOW it's for sure!" :D

I've been often wondering what the non-shipper viewers would say. Or, the actors themselves. Can you imagine? :D But then Joss? What Would Joss Say? :D I mean, he can't just put those two in just like that, he must've had this developed! I wonder if he ever saw this forum, lol.

Ahn, the LOVE OF THEM. *dies* I wonder what next Friday will bring.

LOVE THIS! Picspams have been so great lately...

"With ... Lots Of Unnecessary Physical Proximity?"

I laughed so hard at this, and it's so true!

And re: Echoes- I think if that plot concept had taken place later in the series -- like when the writers realized there were characters on screen who are not Echo, and they're way more interesting -- there would have probably been a Giles/Joyce Band Candy moment. Except BETTER because DeWitt and Dom are so much more epic and BAMFy together. :)

Oh I love this - and the discussion. I think for me it's the hitting Hearn and the way she smiles when he does it - though sure now we know they enjoy torturing people together but still that time had an impact. Actually what kind of date would that be? Dinner, a pretty dress for her, a new suit for him and torturing someone? How messed up is this ship?

Also - not mentioned yet is his 'do you have an exit strategy ma'am?' moment which is in hmm - Man on the Street maybe - which totally convinced me that he was a lot more concerned about her well-being than perhaps he ought to be. After Spy that became even more weighted somehow - because what was he planning to do if things got worse and he hadn't been caught? Drag her out of there himself? Hand her over to the NSA? Hope she had something worked out herself?

THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THIS. They are so awesome.

I think it was for me the end of Echoes that solidified it. The awkwardness was surprising but amusing. It was like "What is happening with you two? Is there something we should know about?"
